SonicWALLŽ
Anti-Spam Desktop delivers client-based anti-spam, anti-phishing
protection for Outlook or Outlook Express e-mail clients on
Windows-based desktops or laptops. With SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop, e-mail once again becomes a tool to enhance productivity—instead
of a source of user frustration and administrative dread. SonicWALL
has engineered costs out of Anti-Spam Desktop to deliver affordable
world-class e-mail protection.SonicWALLŽ Anti-Spam Desktop
installs on a Windows-based desktop or laptop in minutes to
immediately begin protecting Outlook or Outlook Express inboxes
from spam and phishing e-mail. There are no rules to create
and no lists to populate. With continued use, SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop learns about unwanted e-mail types, to deliver even
better inbox protection.
Blocks Spam and Phishing Email:
When SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop is installed on a Windows-based
system it acts as a plug-in to Outlook or Outlook Express. Anti-Spam
Desktop evaluates e-mail arriving via Exchange, POP, or IMAP
to the Outlook or Outlook Express system, and prevents spam
and phishing e-mail from reaching the Inbox.

Supported Platforms and Email Clients:
SonicWALL currently supports the following platform/email
client combinations for Anti-Spam Desktop. While Anti-Spam Desktop
may operate on other platform/e-mail client combinations, such
combinations are NOT supported.
- Windows Vista (32-bit): Outlook 2007, Outlook
2003
- Windows XP: Outlook 2003 and 2007, Outlook Express
6.0
- Windows 2000: Outlook 2002 and 2003, Outlook
Express 6.0
How SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop Works:
Once installed, SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop will start each
time the Outlook or Outlook Express e-mail client is started.
Anti-Spam Desktop evaluates e-mail as it arrives, placing spam
e-mail in the Junk Mail folder, phishing e-mail in Phishing
Mail folder, and legitimate e-mail in the Inbox. With the Challenge/Response
option, challenged e-mail will be placed in the Challenged Mail
folder.

If a spam message does get delivered to the Inbox, users
simply highlight the message and select the “Junk” button to
remove it from the Inbox. This also adds the sender to a blocked
list so that future e-mail from this sender is blocked as spam.
Should a legitimate e-mail unintentionally be placed in Junk
Mail folder, the user may simply highlight the message and select
the “Unjunk button. This action will also add the sender to
an allowed list so that future e-mail from that person is delivered
correctly.
Features & Benefits:
Real-time Protection - To stay up-to-date on evolving
spam and phishing attacks, SonicWALL Email Security interacts
in real-time with the SonicWALL GRID Network. With unparalleled
accuracy, this global network evaluates millions of e-mails
each day. For each e-mail, the GRID determines the reputation
of the sender, content, links, images, attachments, and more.
This enables SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop to deliver accurate
and up-to-date e-mail protection.
Powerful Bayesian Filtering - SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop stops spam with its unique Adversarial Bayesian Filtering
Engine. Bayesian filtering examines the content of an e-mail
message to determine if it is spam. Unlike many spam filters
SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop also considers hundreds of other
e-mail attributes, detecting even the most subtle spammer tricks.
The results are a true and complete evaluation of each message
as spam or good.
Unique Anti-Phishing Protection - SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop has the industry’s only Bayesian Phishing Engine. This
allows SonicWALL to detect phishing e-mail with unsurpassed
accuracy. SonicWALL places these dangerous e-mails in a designated
Phishing Folder, making it clear that those e-mails are potentially
dangerous. This dramatically reduces the risk of having financial,
personal, or proprietary information lost through an e-mail-based
phishing attack.
Easy-to-Manage Allowed and Blocked Lists - Allowed
and Blocks lists allow each user to personalize SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop to meet their specific spam blocking needs. SonicWALL
Anti-Spam Desktop automatically creates and updates a People
(e-mail address) Allowed and Blocked List. Each user can also
update these lists as they see fit. In addition, SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop also allows each user to create and maintain a Company
(Domain Name) Allowed and Blocked list and a Mailing List Allowed
List.
Flexible Controls - Once installed SonicWALL Anti-Spam
Desktop begins blocking spam and phishing e-mail immediately.
Users have the power to change the aggressiveness of the spam
detection settings based on the content of the message. For
example a user can be more aggressive in blocking email with
Obscene Language but less aggressive in blocking email containing
Advertisements. Users can even choose to block or allow messages
based on language. This flexibility lets users fine-tune SonicWALL
Anti-Spam Desktop.
Challenge-Response Ready - SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop
can challenge none, some, or all of the e-mail messages received
from unknown senders. Challenges can be text or a visual image
and users can customize the “challenge” message.
Connectivity to SonicWALL Email Security - When SonicWALL
Anti-Spam Desktop is running on a desktop or laptop, it will
determine if there is an upstream active copy of SonicWALL Email
Security. If so, SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop will attempt to
“push” its People Allowed and Blocked Lists to SonicWALL Email
Security, assuming that appropriate login credentials can be
provided and the user is allowed to update these lists on the
SonicWALL Email Security system. Once set-up, this connectivity
allows the user to use the “Junk” and “Unjunk” buttons in SonicWALL
Anti-Spam Desktop and have the Allowed and Blocked List updated
on SonicWALL Email Security.
Many Other Features:
- Multiple Inbox Support – The Outlook version
of SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop can scan one or more different
inboxes.
- Scan Folder Option – You can re-scan your inbox
or any other folder you wish just by selecting that folder
and using the Scan Selected Folder option.
- Automatic Re-scanning –The SonicWALL GRID Network
is always discovering new spam. This option removes any
newly-discovered spam from your inbox.
- Wireless Device Support – Email received by your
desktop or laptop and forwarded to your wireless device
can have spam and phishing email removed before it is sent
out.
SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop Deployments:
SonicWALLŽ Anti-Spam Desktop can be deployed in many ways
to prevent spam and phishing attacks. Anti-Spam Desktop protects
numerous Outlook and Outlook Express clients running on Windows
Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 platforms. The following
examines three typical deployment configurations, using in-house
Exchange, hosted e-mail, and SonicWALLŽ Email Security.
In-house MS Exchange Server & SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop:
In this scenario, e-mail is received from the Internet and
each user connects to the in-house e-mail MS Exchange e-mail
server (Figure 1). E-mail is downloaded to the Outlook or Outlook
Express client on a regular basis and is filtered for spam and
phishing by SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop. There is no requirement
for the E-mail Server to reside in-house as long as the client
can “reach” the server to retrieve e-mail. Alternately, the
Outlook or Outlook Express Client may use POP or IMAP to pull
down received e-mail from a separate e-mail server.

Server Scenario
Hosted E-mail & SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop:
For many organizations, an ISP or E-mail Hosting company
receives the e-mail and stores it until it is accessed by individual
users. In this scenario, Anti-Spam Desktop can be deployed to
protect Outlook or Outlook Express clients accessed via POP
(but not e-mail accessed by the client via HTTP or HTTPS).

Figure 2 / Hosted E-mail
Scenario
SonicWALL Email Security & SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop:
Should Anti-Spam Desktop detect an upstream SonicWALL Email
Security device, it will display a Web Settings menu on the
Toolbar (Figure 3).

In this scenario (Figure 4), Allowed and Block List information
is copied upstream from SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop to SonicWALL
Email Security. In this configuration each user will have two
Junk Mail boxes: one on the Email Security system and one on
their Desktop client.
